Jeni’s fitness tip:
By incorporating movement during a plank, you can increase the recruitment of muscles throughout your core, while also increasing the focus on specific muscle groups (ex. the glutes). Some of my favorites include: the pendulum plank, forearm plank leg lifts, side plank thread the needle and modified side plank leg lifts.
Kimo Frederickson founded TBF in 2008 out of a home in the suburbs. Since moving to Detroit he takes pride in being part of the local business community and collaborating with the brilliant supporters and thinkers that have helped TBF grow.
Since the beginning, our goal is reaching fitness goals without attitude or judgment. Many of our trainers have also struggled with fitness in the past and we are comfortable with any starting point you may be facing in your journey. Our objective is to help you build and maintain a happier, healthier and better life. Each member of our team brings a unique perspective to the large spectrum of what it means to be “fit.”

I grew up overweight. I just assumed that was how I was going to look and I had to get used to it. I hated everything about myself. No matter how well things could be going in other parts of my life, I was constantly haunted by this resentment I had for my body. In my late teens I hit a wall. All the self-hatred finally made me realize I needed to make a change. I began to bike, which led to running, which led to yoga, which led to school to learn about the human body. I wanted to know that I was taking care of myself the right way and I wanted to help people discover this possibility of a healthy life.
After attending the National Personal Training Institute I began my career at a large corporate gym. I found it to be money-driven and the environment had a lack of empathy all around. So many people seek personal training because they need the help and for the simple fact that they do not feel comfortable exercising, and I felt the corporate gym did not do enough to create a positive environment.
My response was to strike out on my own, and in 2008 I started True Body Fitness out of a private home in Howell. I moved myself and TBF to Detroit in 2010 and it was the best thing I’ve ever done. Since I opened here in Detroit I have felt part of a larger community. Here I am surrounded by supporters and brilliant thinkers, and it is this support and all these great ideas that have molded TBF into what it is today.My approach was and will always be ¨Fitness without the Attitude.” It is not about getting ripped or looking hot, it’s about having a life where you are active and health-conscious. My goal is to create a community here that supports our bodies and our minds, and to try my hardest to make it fun. I am so excited to be here and cannot wait to see what TBF will grow to be in the future!

Jeni discovered her love of fitness after using exercise to overcome chronic pain and injuries she had been experiencing throughout most her adult life. After seeing and feeling the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, she decided to take it to the next level and get the training necessary to help others improve their health.
Jeni received her education at the National Personal Training Institute and Life Time Academy. She earned her personal training and corrective exercise specialist certifications through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). She is also certified in suspension (TRX) and kettlebell.

A native to the Detroit area, Makelle comes from a life-long love of sports and fitness. Her mother is also a personal trainer and her father has been a body builder. She was part of the Wayne State University’s Warriors Softball team for four years and she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Radiation Therapy Technology.
Physical activity has always been a large part of her life and her thirst for competition and continual improvement is very evident in her no-nonsense training style. Makelle will take your goals very seriously while she encourages, challenges and motivates you to perform to your best ability and beyond. Her favorite training moves are single leg walk outs, underhand barbell row, and deadlifts, but don’t expect to get bored with those because she is always trying new variations.
When she is not at TBF, Makelle likes to watch pro sports, especially football, and eat out with friends. She will also play pretty much any sport. Seriously! She loves softball, soccer, football, tennis, and golf. Swimming is the one thing she’s just not that into.
